In the scope of things, a bar of soap seems rather insignificant. Yet we all use soap in some form every single day. Our goal is to help make an everyday experience something special.
But that wasn't always our goal. In the beginning, 1996, I played around with the wonders of soap making in search of an answer to the dry skin problem that is prevalent in my family - and, I found, in lots of others. We live in the beautiful state of Minnesota, with lakes and forests, farms and amber waves of grain, golden cornfields, bluffs and parks and the mighty Mississippi. With all that going for us, we should be practically perfect! However, our lovely state is blessed with two primary seasons -very hot and very cold. Add some wind to that. Our furnaces run hot and dry half the year, and the air conditioning runs the other half. Cars are always drying. That rosy glow you see on the faces of our children - even adults - even Santa Claus - is really just Chapped Cheeks! Even 6 year olds know the agony of hangnails. All winter our hair stands on end from the static charge in our dry air - shins itch, fingers crack open - and our heels become so rough we could scrape paint with them. We know and understand DRY SKIN!!
But getting back to soap. Did you know that maybe you have never used soap? That almost every bar or liquid soap you buy in a store is actually a detergent? And detergents are good - for cleaning clothes, dishes, car motors. They strip off every bit of oil. Clean clothes, clean dishes, clean skin! But - our skin needs some oils. Commercial soaps are usually made of animal fat and petroleum products - the fat because it is cheap, the petroleum because it cleans - as in "strips" oil. Our soap differs in that it is all plant oils, rich in skin softening properties - olive, coconut, palm, sweet almond, soy, shea, etc. We use a lot of extra oil in the soap - and no STRIPPERS! And a wonderful byproduct of soap making is glycerin, which softens skin and acts as a humectant, drawing moisture from the air to our skin for many hours. The big soap companies remove the glycerin from the soap and sell it to other companies to make other things. But I don't have and don't want the equipment or know how to remove glycerin from my soap - we NEED that for our skin to be healthy. Our soap will leave you very clean, with oils left on your skin and a coating of glycerin to seal it in and draw moisture to you.
With daily use, you will notice a dramatic difference in how your skin feels. No more tight, itchy, flaky skin.
After getting the moisturizing formula worked out to provide the most relief to the most people, I became involved with the fascinating array of fragrances. I have always loved perfume and scents, from the little heart-shaped bottles of "Blue Waltz" we had as children, the blossoms on some type of bush that my Grandma would pinch and touch behind her ears before we went to church, the dime store gifts for Mom, the Avon things she gave us as teenagers - even the scent of warm strawberries. So "smelling good" became a big part of formulating our soaps. We just think that when something smells good, you feel good! Can't help it.
So we now have wonderfully moisturizing, great-smelling soap. It is still "just a bar of soap", not meant to cure the problems of the whole world. But if it makes your world just a little nicer, we'll be happy. We love making the soap, and we hope you will love using it. And, we totally Guarantee that it will be the nicest soap you've ever used!
